"Of course I am, but until recently it tasted human, and if I don't find a way to get artificial blood before I get back...well, Martha told me I'd be able to be turned human, but if that's true I'm not sure why I'm not just sent back."
"I..." he considered this a moment before answering. "Well of course I do, but I wouldn't if the Admiral would just turn me human, because then I wouldn't be one! I don't see what the point of all this is!"
"I've seen people walking dogs all the time." Not the same thing, he knew, since the dogs didn't get their own rooms or get wardens. "I'm not sure what this has to do with why I'm here, though."
Persephone just met his eyes with an incredulous look when he said that people were walking dogs and what not, because she knew that he knew that wasn't what she meant at all.
"You think yourself to be an animal when you are not." The words were said calmly. "Do you not find this odd?"
"Because I drink blood. And because I'm genetically part bat. If nothing else that only makes me half a man, half an animal, but not entirely anything." Where did he think he should be? "Dead. Nowhere, or in Hell for drinking blood."
"There were many people from my time who were not entirely anything. No one is entirely anything. All mortals have bits of other things within their bloodlines." Persephone rose to her feet with a swish of skirts when he mentioned hell.
"What do you know of hell, Edgar? Have you ever been there?"
"No. Drinking blood will not land you in hell. I know that because I suppose..." Persephone sighed for a moment, and then she touched the fireplace screen that was made up of the images of souls in torment. "I am the Queen of Hell, Edgar."
"But that's ridiculous! I'm not human. I'm half-bat." Of course, he was ignoring the fact that his mind was nearly entirely human, and that he was fully sentient, but to him, being part bat made a world of difference.
"Of course I'm bothered by it...and of course I'm speaking. I know I'm intentional, but my nature just reverts to bestial when I don't drink blood. Like some sort of cruel joke. I have to damn myself so I can have the awareness to want to not be damned."
"All mortals become unreasonable and irrational when they are hungry. Have you not seen people when they become thus?" Se watched him for a moment and then looked to the room around them. "You need to learn control."
"Well...no. I never saw anyone not eat for a long time." Aside from himself, but that hardly counted. "Control? I tried to learn control. That's why I sometimes stop eating...not lately, but when I do."

Edgar knew he was in trouble, but there was no use in avoiding Persephone, so a short while later, he was at her door, knocking.
