Character Name: Persephone
Series: Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief (Movie verse)
Age: Immortal, but looks to be around 25
From When?: Right after Zeus intervenes for Grover's freedom from Hades.

Inmate/Warden: Warden. Persephone is a goddess who has strict ideas about justice. And she's going to be one of those wardens who's here to do a job and get her deal. Her deal: she wants the ability to leave Hades whenever she wants for as long as she wants without messing up the normal order of the seasons and the fact that she did eat those pomegranate seeds as was decreed by the Fates.

Item: One of the green, glowing pearls, worn in an ornate bracelet around her wrist.

Abilities/Powers: In Mythology, Persephone's return is the sign of spring, so she has an innate ability to grow plants. They grow large and lush for her, and she communes with them. The ability comes from her mother, Demeter and the fact that in order to be kept away from Olympus, the goddess was kept in Nature, where she nourished seeds and plants for the mortal world.

Also, gods have the ability to turn people into things such as plants. Persephone does this very rarely, and I don't believe that she would do it on the barge.

The other side of her powers comes from being the Queen of the Underworld for an extended period of time. While she is in hell, she has the power to control hellhounds and the souls that are hungering. I do not think that will come up on the barge.

Personality: This Persephone is not one who has been Stockholm Syndromed into being a loving, dutiful wife to Hades. No, this Persephone is someone who resents the fact that she is forced to stay in Hell for the time that she is required too. However, despite her hatred of the place and the company she is forced to keep within, Persephone has a sense of duty not to disturb the natural order of the seasons that are created by her allotted time in Hades. The only reason that she has come aboard the barge is that she has been told that she's coming from out of time so the order is restore while she is here, and that when she completes her deal, there will be a way out for her that doesn't upset the delicate balance of power and nature.

However, the balance of power and nature doesn't stop her hatred of her husband, or of her being completely unsupportive of his plans in order to take over Olympus. She actively works against his plans, and is scornful of the fact that he even tried.

Persephone is extremely vindictive. Due to the nature of Hades's “curse” as it were, he is unable to do simple things like eat, drink, sleep or have sex. Persephone does things to excess, often directly under his nose because she is so incredibly angry about her forced imprisonment with him. When he's harmed, she becomes gleeful, and despite the fact that she says that the only thing that she looks forward too is her time on Earth, she clearly looks forward to causing him pain.

Her being so close to someone who only feeds in misery has made it so that she does it a bit as well. Where as Hades feeds on the misery of humans, Persephone has adjusted to such an extent that she feeds off of his. The relationship has created a passive-aggressive cornerstone to Persephone's personality, due to the fact that most of her interpersonal interactions have happened between her and husband for the last however many millennia. This passive-aggressiveness has grown to make her bitter, and the bitterness feeds into her loneliness.

Due to the lack of interpersonal relationships, Persephone at her core is lonely. While she does have her one night stands, by the very nature of them, they mean nothing more than romps. In the end, the partner stomps on pearl and that’s the end of their experience, and then there isn’t a way for them to return to the underworld.

The loneliness has compounded with boredom and her bitterness and covered her in a thick veneer of ice. Passing bored long ago, Persephone has moved into ennui. An eternity in hell with nothing but three month periods of respite have whittled good will and interests away. Nothing brings her pleasure anymore,

Acting as the Queen of the Underworld means that Persephone has also become rather spoiled. She expects things and people to go her way rather quickly. This mostly tends to revolve around people whom she desires to have sex with. Really, Persephone doesn't take no for an answer to such an extent that she becomes touchy-feely to nearly a sexual harassment sort of way. It can be unclear how much of this is truth and how much is show, but she is very obvious in her desires even when her husband isn't around.

Interestingly, for someone who was as close to her Mother as Persephone was, she doesn’t react strongly to someone maternal being in danger. While she does tell Percy to take his mother and leave the Underworld, she places no more attachment to the words than she does to anything else. Emotions like love are very private and guarded for her, and she will go out of her way to hide what she’s actually thinking/feeling.

That said, Persephone does believe in love despite everything. She's intervened on behalf of it in the case of Orpheus and Eurydice, using her influence with Hades in order to get him to release the the spirit of the musician's wife. Inwardly, she’s a romantic, and she wishes that her story could have the happy ever after that the myths give her, but she will never admit it.

History: The offspring Zeus's seduction of Demeter, Persephone was a happy child who was raised away from the drama of Olympus. She was raised in the garden of nature, planting seeds and nourishing the plants that fed the mortals of the world. It is said that four of her uncle/brothers had wooed her (Hermes, Apollo, Ares and Hephaestus) but Demeter had rejected all of their suits on Persephone's behalf, preferring to keep her daughter young, virginal and carefree in the flowering fields with nymphs and wood sprites to keep her company.

The God of the Underworld found her picking wildflowers and he became instantly infatuated with her, and he drove his chariot up through a hole in the Earth, determined to make her his. The young goddess spilled the flowers she was holding, and she ran away from the chariot, running toward where she suspected her mother would be. Hades caught her and dragged her into his chariot, taking her down into Hades to his palace.

Demeter went wild with fury and mourning for her daughter, and she plunged the earth into winter in order to show her grief. When Zeus saw what his sister's actions were doing to the beloved humans that he had created, he decided to intervene at last.

Before Zeus's intervention, Hades had attempted to woo Persephone through gifts and fawning over her, offering her her favorite foods and jews and power. While she enjoyed the power she had over him, she spurned his gifts and advances, instead often laughing at him and growing more and more hungry. On the last day, Persephone was wondering through Hades's gardens and she was starving. She ran into a boy who told her that no one was looking and was offering her pomegranate seeds. After eating nine of them (according to the movie.) Hermes came to return her to Olympus, but when she appeared in the throne room, her husband was already there. He made the argument that the Fates had decreed that anyone who ate the food of the Underworld would be forced to remain there.

A compromise was reached in order to stop the inevitable war. Persephone would be forced to remain in Hades with him for as many months out of the year as she had eaten seeds, but he would be cursed with the fact that the only thing that would make him happy was the misery of humans, and by extension his wife.

For nine months out of the year, every year, Persephone stays with Hades, watching as the mortal world changes. With each change of belief, Hades changed as well, as did Hades and Persephone. They shifted to fit in with the beliefs of Christianity and the perception of the large devil-like creature, until they reached the current incarnation of goth/metal personifications.

Persephone often interferes in her husband plans by doing such things as releasing Cerberus in order to help Hercules complete his quests.

Sample Journal Entry: [5-10 Sentences] So this is where all of those souls that Hades expected have gone missing too. Oh, don't worry, I'm not here to take you to him; no, anything that makes my husband angry is something that I firmly endorse. I will admit it's odd to be surrounded by souls that still have corporal forms. I am told that there is a garden... I'd like to stick my fingers in the dirt if possible.

My name is Persephone. Yes that one.

Sample RP: [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV]

The stars were different here. They were stories in them that she did not know. Once Persephone had knew all of the tales that were written in them, but then the time she spent on Olympus was short and the stars showed for less and less time while she was there. The newer stories remained unknown, and she often found herself looking into their shapes for the words that they would offer to her.

This barge felt wrong to her. There was no connection to either the Earth or the heavens, and even the green of the greenhouse felt different to her when she had gone to commune with the plants. She could still coax the greens from the seed, she could feel them rise up and circle around her wrists with pleased sounds, but they weren't the plants from her youth, or from the way the earth had been changed.

This world was uncomfortable, but she'd adjust. In order to make it so that she could return to Olympus at will, she would adjust. Her palm extended against the railing of the barge and she looked at it for a moment. There was a little blink and the leafy vine across her wrist extended and looped up towards her middle finger, stroking it softly, she cooed. Soon she would get her inmate, and then very soon after, she would be able to return home where she belonged; it had been a very long road.
